1. Once you see it, you can change it.
Have you ever met someone who had an obvious problem, but they just couldn’t see it? Each of us develops very specific ways of seeing people and things. A good coach will ask you questions that open your eyes to see yourself, people and situations differently.
A few weeks ago a client had an “Aha!” moment. “I see it. I never thought of it that way. Thanks for telling me that,” he said.
I didn’t tell him! He followed my questions to discover the problem himself. Then he began to ask himself questions like those I asked him. He is now learning to become more aware of himself and life around him.
Awareness is the beginning – of change, of growth and progress.
2. Having someone believe in you can change your life.
Jesus doesn’t see you as you are. He looks from outside of time and sees your potential – your destiny. He calls you out of your present situation into that potential.
A heart coach sees you as Jesus does. He believes in you and refuses to see you any other way. As you work with your coach you begin to see yourself as Jesus does. Knowing who you really are changes what you do.
So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:16-17 (NLT)
3. You can’t do this alone.
We need each other. God made us to be a part of something so much bigger than ourselves. We need each other to grow and become whole.
The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part…. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 1 Corinthians 12: 25-26 (MSG)
4. We all need to be heard and understood.
God has placed in each of us desires to be significant, accepted, valued, loved and understood. A heart coach listens with his heart and with the skill of a trained listener. Heart listening says: “I believe in you. I care enough to focus my time and energy on you. You are worth it!”
The most frequent comment I hear from the people I coach is how good they feel about themselves because someone really listened to them.
5. “You cannot solve your problems with the same thinking you used to create them” Albert Einstein.
Science has shown that early in life we develop very deep paths in our thinking. For the rest of our lives, we follow these same thinking paths. A heart coach will ask questions to help you explore deeply and think in fresh ways. And he will lead you to encounter Jesus and learn His thoughts about you and your situation.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)
6. You don’t need advice; you need wisdom.
People don’t have the answers to your problems. You do. You may not know it yet, but you do. Heart coaches help people discover the wisdom God has already given them and ask God what they don’t yet know.
By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 2 Peter 1:3 (NLT)
7. Heart coaching gives you the power to make real, lasting change in your life.
Change is hard. First, we have to see the need to change (awareness). Next, we must be motivated to change. Third, we have to know how to change. Even then we often try and fail. Think dieting.
Why do we fail? Most people try to change by doing different things (changing actions). If you chop off a weed in your garden will it grow back? What if you dig the weed out by the root?
Heart coaching goes to the root desires and beliefs that cause you to do what you do. Real, lasting change comes from changing who you are, not just trying to change what you do.
He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.” Matthew 15:13 (NIV)
Heart coaching helped me get to the root of some deep-seated problems in my life. My coach helped me to make some powerful changes in a very short period of time.
